Adoption Education
Community Adoption Education
ADOPTIONS OF INDIANA recognizes the importance of educating the
community on adoption related issues. Our executive director and
staff regularly provide workshops and present at conferences on
a variety of adoption related issues. Staff members provide continuing
educational trainings for hospital staff, legal education, and
various parent education groups.
Our agency is a member of Indiana’s Adoption Coalition which
works with other local agencies to provide educational workshops
to the adoption community and to bring nationally respected speakers
to Indiana.
Our staff is available to speak at local schools, churches, hospitals,
legal forums, continuing education, seminars/conferences, or elsewhere
in the community.
Middle Childhood Program
As our children grow older we are not present every minute of
their daily lives. They attend school and spend time with friends
outside our homes. Our children need to be empowered to deal with
questions and comments regarding their adoption that are directed
toward them. ADOPTIONS OF INDIANA has developed a 6-week Middle
Childhood Group that provides children choices of how to respond
to questions and comments, discusses common adoption myths portrayed
in the media and factual information about adoption, and teaches
children how to more openly discuss questions and concerns with
parents. This program uses a variety of educational tools including
discussions, games, art activities, and role play.
Assessment with the child and the parent(s) is required BEFORE
group begins. A parent orientation is provided at the beginning
of each 6-week program.
This program was developed through the use of the following resources:
Wise-up Powerbook for Kids by C.A.S.E. and Real Parents Real Kids
by Holly van Gulden.
